Disabling the “HP-Setup” wifi on an HP LaserJet

Our home printer, an HP LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw, constantly broadcasts a wifi network called “HP-Setup>40-M281”. Why does it need to do that though? We only ever plug it in by USB.

I tried every option I could find from the built-in screen on the printer to disable this wifi. I also tried a factory reset, but no luck. Turns out there's a trick.

Solution: Enable and the “Wi-Fi Direct” feature and then disable it again.

Enabling activates a new “DIRECT-40-HP M281” network and deactivates the “HP-Setup>40-M281” network. Disabling again will deactivate the DIRECT network but not re-activate the HP Setup one. Problem solved!
